Cyanosis is a condition where the skin and mucous membranes appear blue. It is caused by desaturated or abnormal hemoglobin.

If a term newborn develops jaundice within the first 24 hours of life, it is considered pathologic.

Congenital heart diseases can present themselves during the neonatal period, but they can also be acquired. The age at which CHD presents varies depending on the underlying lesion, its effect on cardiac performance, and its reliance on the ductus arteriosus.

Neonatal sepsis can be classified as either early onset (which occurs in newborns less than 72 hours old) or late onset (which occurs between 3 and 7 days of life).
